Columbia Pike Multimodal Project

Arlington County has initiated a related project, the Columbia Pike Multimodal Project. This study addresses all modes of transportation along Columbia Pike, including related right-of-way parameters, environmental features, and utilities issues along the entire length of Columbia Pike in Arlington County. The Columbia Pike Transit Initiative and the Multimodal Project are coordinating on the technical aspects and public involvement as both projects move forward.

COLUMBIA PIKE TRANSIT INITIATIVE PROGRESS

WELCOME! The Columbia Pike Transit Initiative is an important element in a decades-long effort by Arlington and Fairfax Counties to accommodate growing demand for transit services along the quickly redeveloping urban corridor of Columbia Pike. Many in the local community have expressed a desire for a modern, higher capacity transit system that supports expected levels of ridership and reinforces the “Main Street” environment envisioned for the Pike.

This phase of the Initiative includes environmental documentation and preliminary engineering for transit improvements extending five miles along Columbia Pike, between the Bailey’s Crossroads/Skyline area in Fairfax County and Pentagon City in Arlington County, Virginia.

As you may know, Columbia Pike is a vibrant thoroughfare and serves as a critical gateway between Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. An advanced transit system supports a corridor vision that allows both Arlington and Fairfax Counties to promote high-density development, pedestrian and bicycle friendly designs, mixed-used activity centers, and a range of housing options. By connecting residential and commercial areas along Columbia Pike to major activity centers in Bailey’s Crossroads and Pentagon City, a higher level of transit service serves as a keystone for the vision of community life along the Pike.

The Columbia Pike corridor continues to experience significant population and employment growth. Transit is a key component of how the corridor currently functions, and is vital for the future vision of the corridor. Expected growth will increase transportation demands. Additional overall transportation capacity will be needed for the corridor to continue to thrive as a livable community – one where residents want to live and businesses want to operate.

There is a need to identify potential transit investments that will:

  • Sustain and improve key existing transportation markets
  • Accommodate future growth
  • Develop new transit markets

A successful transit improvement in the corridor will address these areas by diversifying and enhancing the quality of transportation options along the corridor.

We plan on keeping you updated as we continue our work and we welcome your input and comments. Contact us! Thank you for visiting the Columbia Pike Transit Initiative.
